Canada is one of the listed countries that are eligible to enter Spain visa-free for up to 90 days. If you are a Permanent Resident of Canada or a citizen from another country, please research specific rules for your country and to see if you qualify for a visa-free entry or need to apply for a Schengen Student Visa instead.

ANSÖKNINGSPROCESS
Processen är lång. Vänligen tillåt dig själv minst 2 månader att förbereda och samla alla nödvändiga dokument för att tillhandahålla Spaniens konsulat.
Den främsta spanska ambassaden i Kanada är i Ottawa. Men om du bor i en annan stad än Ottawa och Gatineau, måste du ansöka om ditt visum på det spanska generalkonsulatet i Toronto eller Montreal enligt deras konsulära jurisdiktion. Observera att det finns ett konsulat i Vancouver, men de är inte tillgängliga och det rekommenderas att istället ansöka om visum från Toronto -konsulatet.
Nedan innehåller alla nödvändiga pappersarbete som krävs:
- Giltigt pass eller resedokument som erkänts av Spanien med en minsta giltighet som motsvarar den avsedda vistelsen i Spanien
- Skolregistrering: Ett brev utfärdat av en godkänd akademisk institution i Spanien som bevisar skolregistrering
- Utomlands sjukförsäkring täckning (De flesta universitet/utbildningsinstitutioner tillhandahåller detta vid inskrivning. Om universitetet inte inkluderar försäkring är det obligatoriskt att köpa det från en privat sjukförsäkringsleverantör)
- Bevis på boende – Hotel reservation or confirmation letter from the academic instruction indicating the conditions of your accommodation. Private housing must be accompanied by invitation.
- Bevis på ekonomiskt pålitlighet -Du måste tillhandahålla kontoutdrag, stipendier, etc, som visar att du har minst 538 euro eller $820 kanadensisk per månads vistelse som krävs för studieperioden. Om dina föräldrar istället hjälper dig med ekonomiskt stöd måste du tillhandahålla en kopia av deras två senaste kontoutdrag tillsammans med ett attesterat och undertecknat brev från dina föräldrar som anger deras samtycke.
- Läkarintyg- this is required if the duration of stay is over 6 months. It is recommended to ask your family doctor the worded template below, which is taken from the official” Embassy of Spain in Canada” website.
“This medical certificate states that Mr./Mrs. ….. does not suffer from any diseases that may have serious consequences on public health in accordance with the provisions contained in the 2005 International Health Regulations.”
Obs! Det är inte obligatoriskt att översätta bokstaven på spanska. Spaniens konsulat i Toronto accepterar det på engelska.
- Poliskontroll: if the duration of the stay is over six months, a Police Check issued by the authorities of all the countries where an applicant has resided for the last 5 years, including Canada. The Police Check is to be issued by the RCMP and contains the fingerprints of the visa applicant. It can take up to a month before receiving the record of fingerprints. This documentation is issued in Ottawa and will be mailed to the Visa applicant. You would need to provide the original document of RCMP no Criminal record with fingerprints for your application. The cost is $85 at the time of writing this article.
- Ansökningsformulär för visum – Completed and signed with one (1) recent full-face color photograph taken in person by a commercial photographer or studio no more than six months before the application is submitted. Länk till visumansökningsformuläret finns här
- Visumavgift– Visa processing fee for Canadians is $ CAN 125.00. Please refer to the consular fee chart for other nationalities. Only a certified cheque or money order payable to the “Embassy of Spain” will be accepted. Please do not send cash.

Extra tips: Spansk visumansökan för kanadensare
Vänta upp till 5 veckor för Spaniens konsulat enligt din konsulära jurisdiktion att behandla visumet och få det returnerat till dig. I genomsnitt bör det ta mellan 3-4 veckor för dig att få tillbaka ditt pass med ett godkänt visum. Det är dock bäst att kontakta konsulatet via telefon eller e-post för att följa upp din visumansökan för eventuella förhastade förfrågningar.
Att få visumet godkänt är bara hälften av det slutförda arbetet. Visumet som godkänts av Spaniens konsulat är endast giltig i 90 dagar. Det är absolut nödvändigt att när du anländer till Spanien registrera dig på en comisaria inom 30 dagar efter din inresestämpel, så att du kan få ett utländskt identitetskort, känt som Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero eller TIE under hela din vistelse.

In addition to getting the student visa processed, please contact your University/school to see if they need any documents legalized, especially if you are enrolled in a post-secondary degree (Ph.D or Masters). Spain is one of the EU countries that require your university’s documents to be translated in Spanish and legalized together. The documents must be originals or they must be notarized copies. Canada has abolished the Hague apostille legalization and legalizes documents via these 2 channels only:
– Global Affairs In Ottawa
– Spaniens konsulat i Toronto, Ottawa eller Montreal

Time is sensitive, so please allow yourself enough time with Global Affairs in Ottawa to process all of your documents. Global Affairs in Ottawa does not follow their processing time window, as indicated on their website. It will take longer to send the documents. We recommend allowing them up to 5 weeks to process your documents once receiving the documents from you.
You will need to complete the Authentication Form (EXT2165e) and mail to Global Affairs Canada first for your documents to be legalized and stamped . There is no fee for doing this. Please also include the two prepaid envelopes in the package to Global Affairs. Please include a money order or bank draft payable to the Consulate of Spain in Toronto or Montreal. As of July 2021, it costs $11.50 to legalize each document TYPE (NOT Page).
När Spaniens konsulat tar emot dokumentet från Global Affairs kommer de också att tillhandahålla sin stämpel innan dokumenten skickas tillbaka till dig.

FÅ DIN TARJETA DE IDENTIDAD DE EXTRANJERO (SLIPS)
a) Registrering av din adress (Padron)
Att ansöka om studentvisum är bara hälften av arbetet. När du väl kommer till Spanien är nästa steg att hitta bostad och boka tid för att få en empadronamiento (registrering av din adress hos stadshuset).
För att få en tid för din Padron kan du ringa 010 som kopplar dig till kontoret. De enda språk som talas är katalanska och spanska.
Om du letar efter bostad genom en förmedling, kom ihåg att du måste visa originalhandskrivna underskrifter på ditt kontrakt i stadshuset för din Padron.
En fotokopia av ditt kontrakt är inte möjlig.
If you do not have a contract, the other option is to have your landlord provide the following things to you: a written letter in Spanish or Catalan stating that the landlord authorises you to live in his or her flat at this address. The letter needs to have the landlord’s name, address, rent payment and the date of move in. The landlord also needs to provide a photocopy of her ID (DNI) as well.
Om hyresvärden inte vill gå igenom handlingarna, försök att få honom eller henne att följa med dig till kontoret där han eller hon bara visar upp legitimation och undertecknar några papper.
b) TIE-utnämning:
Det är viktigt att klargöra att TIE är nödvändigt för alla icke-Eus som bor i Spanien medan Eus som inte kommer från Spanien måste ansöka om en NIE istället. Vi kommer inte att diskutera NIE i den här artikeln.
För icke-EU som har ansökt om studentvisum tillbaka i sitt hemland, har du redan ett NIE utfärdat tillsammans med ditt tillfälliga studentvisum som har godkänts av den spanska ambassaden eller konsulatet. Du måste dock registrera en TIE som förlänger giltigheten av ditt visum.
To get a TIE you must book an appointment online and it is very challenging, but possible to get this appointment yourself. The government releases a handful of appointments each day, but they almost always get booked up. Unfortunately there is a group that is colluding in stealing these appointments and selling them in the market for exorbitant prices. Some can range to 100 euros or more to have an agency give you the TIE appointment. The Spanish government has not done anything to stop this activity. Det tar bara lite tid innan du kan boka tid. Ett knep är att prova varje måndag morgon då jag har fått höra att det är dagen då systemet släpper TIE-bokningarna.
If on the other hand you don’t mind paying an agency to assist you and you want to save time and peace of mind with securing a TIE appointment, finding an agency may be a better choice.
c) Förbereda dina dokument
När du väl fått TIE-mötet bokat är resten av de andra sakerna lätta. Du måste ha följande förberett inför mötet
1. Paid tax form 790 Codigo 012 Policia (15,92€ for the initial card). You print out the tax form and go to any bank to pay it (it is also possible to pay by some ATM machines).

1. Originalpass
1x Kopia av inresestämpeln till Schengenområdet inom viserings giltighetstid.
2. 2x recent ID photos with white background – SPANISH ID FORMAT ”tamaño carnet”
3. Empadronamiento (inte äldre än 3 månader)
På dagen för ditt möte vänligen ta med alla de 3 sakerna som nämns ovan. Om du inte talar spanska kan du anlita någon som hjälper dig med översättningen eller ta med en vän som hjälper dig. Du måste göra dina fingeravtryck och efteråt kommer du att bli ombedd att komma tillbaka för att hämta ditt TIE-kort.
Bearbetningstiden kan ta allt från 30-45 dagar. Men de kommer att utfärda en tillfällig TIE som du kan ha under tiden medan du väntar på att den ursprungliga ska utfärdas. Även om de kräver att du går in på hemsidan för att boka en dag för TIE-hämtning, kan du bara dyka upp på kontoret för att hämta din TIE inom tidsperioden utan att egentligen behöva boka en tid. Flera av mina klasskamrater har gått och hämtat kortet utan att ha bokat tid.
