Tarjeta de identidad de extranjero (TIE)

What is the TIE?

The Spanish Foreign Identity Card (TIE) is a personal procedure, since the registration of the fingerprint is requested. It is mandatory for all foreigners who have obtained a visa or authorization to reside in Spain for a period of more than six months or who have long-term residence. If you dont have this document, even if you have a visa, it could lead to sanctions.

TIE Application Validity and Deadline

The TIE has a validity identical to the period of authorization or recognition of the right that justifies its issuance. The deadline to request it is one month from entry into Spain or from the date of publication of the resolution of the residence authorization.

What is the difference between the NIE and the TIE?

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a tax identification number assigned to foreigners in Spain, while the TIE is the physical document that certifies the legal status and identity of foreigners. The NIE is necessary to obtain the TIE.
